A Legacy of Connection & Growth

The History of the Sierra 2 Senior Center

The Sierra 2 Senior Center has been a vital community resource since its founding, providing older adults with opportunities to stay active, engaged, and socially connected. Managed by the Program Coordinator and guided by the Senior Committee, Executive Director, SCNA Board, and dedicated volunteers, the center continues to evolve to meet the needs of its participants.

Originally launched in November 2000 as the ‘49ers Plus Center for Older Adults, SCNA created the program to address the lack of safe, organized, and accessible spaces for older adults in Curtis Park and surrounding areas. With support from the City of Sacramento, local businesses, and area agencies, the center operated two days a week, offering a welcoming space for socialization, learning, and recreation.

In its early years, the center relied on funding from the Ethel Hart Fund, the City of Sacramento, and SCNA. By 2006, it became self-sustaining, fundraising independently to support its growing programs.

Many long-standing activities—like the Life History Writing Group, Book Club, and Potluck Gatherings—were established in the center’s early years and continue today, welcoming both new and returning participants. Thanks to the commitment of its members, volunteers, and supporters, the Senior Center remains a thriving part of the Sierra 2 Center, fostering a strong sense of community for older adults.
