Artist Statement
My love of jazz influences my work as much as anything else. While painting I try to express the lyricism and freedom of a jazz musician exploring the relationship between improvisation and structure. Neither purely abstract nor totally realistic, my landscape work explores the poetry between the two. It is this relationship between light and dark, order and disorder, the expected and the unexpected, harmony and dissonance that interests me. It is as if my paintings are emblems of places we have all seen and loved, images of places we keep deep in our memories, but can’t quite find again. My paintings, like music, are about a felt but not ultimately tangible reality. They are an exploration of the difference between what is and what could be.
