Town Hall: Reviewing your Community Plan – the Takeaway

Town Hall: Reviewing your Community Plan – the Takeaway

February 15, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The General Plan release date has been rescheduled by the city until early 2023, postponing our 12 October Town Hall. Watch for future updates on our websites, Facebook, and ViewPoint editions.

The second Town Hall, “Reviewing your Community Plan – the Takeaway” will follow on October 12th at 6:30pm at the release of the 2040 General Plan, Climate Action Plan and EIR for citizen review.

On September 1st at 6:30pm we held our first Town Hall: “Facing Urbanization – Strategies for our Community Plans” discussing the combined effects of infill development, transportation plans, and climate action.

Discussions include the issues, the City’s strategies, and community alternatives. We will invite Council members to be informed by our community discussions.

Registration is required and attendance may be limited by Zoom capabilities. Zoom meeting information will be sent via email and posted on this page.

Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association and Land Park Neighborhood Association invite you to attend the upcoming town Hall Forums to discuss the City’s strategies for Housing, Transportation and Climate action that will be presented in the September release of our 2040 Community Plan.

Our major presentation will be from CivicWell and Peter Calthrop, a nationally known urban planner, speaking on Corridor Infill Development and the positive benefits of this smart-growth strategy in response to the current Climate and Housing crisis we face. The Forum will follow with a discussion of local applications and take audience questions. Bruce Pierini (SCNA) will facilitate with community advocates in housing, transportation and climate joining the panel.

The goal of the forums is to prepare our neighborhoods for reviewing their General Plan Update – 2040 Community Plans and the Climate Action Plan in October.

Tools to prepare for your Community Plan Review,

CivicWell, previously known as the Local Government Commission, supports civic groups in developing our community’s future by providing urban design, policy and legislative support. This week they assembled a forum of notable urban designers, economists and affordable housing developers to present “ Housing and the Strip: California’s Untapped Opportunity” providing compelling arguments for infill development on existing commercial corridors.

Benefits included housing affordability through project scale, synergistic support for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and quantified Environmental savings of GHG emissions and other critical resources. They provided support for reasonable parking ratios of 1:1. Additionally, they provided FAR building guidance relating the number of traffic lanes to the number of developed stories (ex: 2 traffic lanes + bicycle lanes with 3-4 story development; 4 traffic lanes with 4-6 stories).

The one hour presentation was followed by 30 minutes of Q&A. In all, this forum was the strongest support we have seen for our Community Positions on Land Use in the 2040 General Plan Update. Both of these tools are great for sharing with your neighborhoods in preparation for the current Climate Action Plan review and the September review of the City’s draft of our 2040 Community Plans.
