Monitoring of contaminated rail yard dust during cleanup inactive phase to resume

The Curtis Park rail yard cleanup was the subject of a September 15 meeting between neighbors, SCNA, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Petrovich Development (rail yard owner), and ERM (cleanup contractor). The meeting was held to discuss concerns about contaminated dust coming off the rail yard site and into the neighborhood on windy days.

Under the current cleanup order, air monitors are required only when active excavation is occurring. Soil excavation for 2004 was completed in June. Railcars have not been available at the expected pace to remove the stockpiled contaminated soil to a hazardous waste site in Utah. Thus, removing the stockpiled material will likely extend into early 2005.

To address concerns about dust from the mounds of stockpiled soil, Petrovich and ERM agreed to cover the inactive stockpiles and to keep wet the piles staged for loading. In addition, the air quality at the site will be monitored on the next windy day, and the results will be reported to DTSC and made available to the public.

For more information on this or other cleanup questions, call Mr. Nathan Schumacher (DTSC) at (916) 255-3650 or by Email. It is anticipated that the cleanup will be completed by October 2005.
