Senior Center

The Senior Center is located in Room 12 at Sierra 2. It is open every day. Hours vary depending on the scheduled activities. The Senior Center was established in November 2000 and it provides on-going activities, special events, information and fellowship to seniors who live in Curtis Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Falls Prevention:Flex, Stretch, and Balance

Relax with some gentle movement, and enjoy the music. Instructor, Jim Sekelsky, recommends wearing shoes with smooth leather soles.

Pole Walking Clinics
2nd and 4th Thursday each month, 9:15 a.m. ($5 donation)
Pole-walking is popular in Europe, and not just for seniors – it’s for everyone.  Pole walking helps seniors and others with chronic pain to continue walking exercise with reduced stress on joints, increased arm movement, and improved posture.

Wise Women’s Meeting
Second Tuesday of the month, 2-4 p.m.
Are you interested in joining a women’s circle? If you are 55 or older, you have fulfilled your role as Maiden and Mother and you are now moving into the third phase of your life as Elder, Grandmother and Crone. This circle of women gather together as seekers of wisdom. The group connects through sharing stories, poetry, song, dance, art, meditation and celebrations.

Join storyteller Lawrence Crason, of the Sacramento Storytellers Guild, as he shares tips, techniques and the world of storytelling (humorous, tall tale, travel, etc.).  Each class provides and opportunity to improve presentation techniques and provide stories of your life. Topics include:

Bring a brown bag lunch and share garden tips and techniques, exchange cuttings and seedlings, visit gardens in the neighborhood, and hear speakers on topics such as pests and pruning tips.

Acting Against Aging
First and Third Mondays, 1-3 pm (fee)
Facilitated by Tom Rhatigan who is a teaching artist and member of Actors’ Equity Association with 25 years experience in acting and directing. The program includes learning principles identified by cognitive researchers, acting experience and education in arts and gerontology. This program explores human choices and possibilities, instills inner strength and self esteem, and encourages pride and self confidence through improved speech and maintaining strong connections with the mind, body emotions and spirit.

Computer Basics

This class focuses on teaching you to surf the web, Google for information, email friends and relatives, send and receive digital photos and other computer basics.  Classes will be small to ensure all your questions are answered. Bring your own laptop (with wifi capacity) for $75, or use one of the senior computers for $125.

Events          

Jewelry!
Starting in July, help is needed to sort and price jewelry for the annual “Curtis Festive Holiday Jewelry and Craft Sale.” All proceeds from the sale support the Senior Center. This group meets Friday afternoons from 1-3 pm. A class in making earrings will be taught by Diane Hulting during this time. The Senior Center is also now accepting donations of jewelry for the sale.

Salad Bar and Bingo
July 20 and August 17, 12:30-2:30
Bring salad items with your favorite salad dressing and enjoy the salad bar then stay for Bingo. Bring a prize and play two cards free. Donation requested.

Apples to Apples
August 3, 1-3 p.m.
Learn this delightful card game called Apples to Apples. This fun card game requires 4-8 people to play.

Vitas—Innovative Hospice Care
August 5, 10-11 a.m.
Be a resource for you and your family and learn what services VITAS offers from Maureen Lawrence, VITAS community liaison. Spend some time thinking and writing out your wishes, while enjoying coffee and treats. Questions?  Call Mae
